I would like to share with you a short film about how language skills are a barrier for succeeding in Mathematics, not because English Language Learners (ELL) cannot do math but because the lack of English  language skills is in their path to succeed.

This film was passed to me by Dr. Marguerite Lukes from the Department of Education and Language Acquisition. In her words: "The short film was made in California after Prop 227 was passed that underscores in a very poignant way how ELLs struggle to access math content".

My connection is really looking to address this kind of barriers for students acquiring Basic Skills in both Math and English.

By the way, Dr. Lukes is also giving a talk at the Research Colloquium Seminar today, May 9 at 3:30 pm, E50.
